FAQs
How does the ZEB work with Modern Renewable Solutions?
The ZEB (Zero Emission Boiler), available through Modern Renewable Solutions, is an innovative heat battery that operates differently from traditional boilers. Much like charging a phone, the ZEB uses electricity to “charge up” and stores this energy as heat. When you need to warm your home, the ZEB releases this stored heat on demand. Thanks to its smart charging technology, the ZEB assesses your energy needs, the weather, and your tariff to determine the optimal amount of energy to store. It typically charges during off-peak times, like overnight, to minimise electricity costs and can top up during the day if needed. The duration of a full charge depends on factors such as your home’s size, heating usage, and weather conditions.
Can the ZEB heat my home?
Yes! The ZEB works seamlessly with most “wet” central heating systems, meaning it’s compatible with homes that have pipes and radiators. It’s an ideal solution for homes such as flats, bungalows, semi-detached, or detached houses that use up to 16,000 kWh of energy annually and have a heat loss of less than 6kW. To check your energy usage, you can refer to your utility bills. Installation by Modern Renewable Solutions is quick and easy, usually taking just 1-2 days, making the ZEB a great green alternative if installing a heat pump isn’t an option for your property.
What materials does the ZEB use for storage?
The ZEB employs a proprietary mix of high-density, non-toxic, and eco-friendly materials to store heat effectively and sustainably, ensuring it’s both safe and efficient.
How much energy can the ZEB store?
The ZEB stores 40kWh of usable thermal energy, making it ideal for homes with medium to large heating needs.

How does the ZEB differ from an electric boiler?
While electric boilers draw electricity from the grid whenever heat is needed (often during more expensive peak hours), the ZEB charges during off-peak times and stores that energy as heat. This makes the ZEB more cost-effective and eco-friendly compared to standard electric boilers.
How long does a ZEB installation take?
Installation with Modern Renewable Solutions typically takes just 1-2 days, making the switch to a greener heating solution quick, efficient, and hassle-free.
How much does the ZEB cost with Modern Renewable Solutions?
At Modern Renewable Solutions, the ZEB (Zero Emission Boiler) is available for approximately £6,000, which includes VAT and delivery. Currently, the ZEB is subject to 20% VAT and doesn’t yet qualify for any subsidies or government grants. However, we are actively monitoring developments and hope that in the future, the ZEB will become eligible for various support schemes to help reduce the upfront cost.
Installation costs can vary depending on the specifics of your home and the requirements of your heating system. Modern Renewable Solutions can provide you with a detailed quote specific to your situation, ensuring a smooth and efficient installation process tailored to your needs.
You can also opt for a maintenance plan similar to the tepeo Care Plan, which helps maintain your ZEB and ensures it runs smoothly for years to come under its 10-year guarantee.
What tariff is recommended for the ZEB?
To get the most out of your ZEB, Modern Renewable Solutions recommends switching to a time-of-use tariff with one or more off-peak periods. Providers such as Octopus, OVO, EDF, and Scottish Power offer these tariffs, often marketed for electric vehicle (EV) owners. These tariffs are ideal for the ZEB, allowing it to charge during cheaper off-peak periods, reducing your overall energy costs.
Alternatively, dynamic tariffs can also take advantage of the ZEB’s smart storage capabilities. These tariffs allow you to benefit from surplus renewable energy and, in some cases, negative pricing. The most cost-effective tariff will depend on your overall electricity consumption, and Modern Renewable Solutions can offer guidance to help you optimise your settings for the best savings.

If Wi-Fi isn’t available in the area where you plan to install the ZEB, you can connect it using Ethernet. The ZEB relies on a steady internet connection to operate properly, and Ethernet is a reliable alternative.
Will I notice any difference in my heating or hot water with the ZEB?
No, you won’t notice any difference in the performance of your heating or hot water system. The ZEB operates just like a conventional boiler, ensuring that your home stays warm and your water supply remains at the desired temperature.
Can my plumber/electrician install the ZEB?
No, the ZEB must be installed and commissioned by Modern Renewable Solutions or a qualified installer who is registered with tepeo. It’s crucial that all installations follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as well as legal regulations and industry standards. If your installer is interested in becoming tepeo-registered, we can help them through the process.
Do I need to make any changes to my home to install a ZEB?
No major changes are required to install a ZEB in your home. It works with your existing heating system, so you won’t need to retrofit anything. However, you will need a hot water tank if you don’t already have one. The ZEB is ideal for homes with annual energy usage of up to 16,000 kWh and a heat loss under 6 kW. Modern Renewable Solutions will carry out a home survey to ensure the ZEB is the right fit for your property.
What electrical connections are required for the ZEB?
To install a ZEB, the following electrical connections are needed:
- Power via a double pole isolator, directly from the consumer unit (50A breaker/RCD protection, 10mm² minimum cable size).
- Heating system power output via a 3A fused spur (non-switched) to a wiring centre or directly to the external pump for ZEB-controlled pump overrun.
- Thermostat heat demand signal, either 230v or Volt Free.
Can the ZEB replace my existing gas, oil, LPG, or electric boiler?
Yes! The ZEB is a direct replacement for traditional gas, oil, LPG, or electric boilers. Modern Renewable Solutions can ensure a seamless installation process to upgrade your heating system to a greener alternative.
Can I replace my storage heaters on an Economy7 tariff with the ZEB?
The ZEB requires a “wet” central heating system, which means your home must have radiators or underfloor heating. Homes with storage heaters typically don’t have a wet central heating system, so you may need to make adjustments. However, if your home has retained the original wet system, the ZEB can be installed with ease.
I have a dry heating system. Will the ZEB work for me?
No, the ZEB is only compatible with wet central heating systems (i.e., those with pipes and radiators). It won’t work with dry heating systems like storage heaters.
Can the ZEB replace my combi boiler?
Yes, but you will need a separate hot water solution, as the ZEB is a heat-only boiler. Modern Renewable Solutions offers various options, including hot water cylinders, smart cylinders, and PCM heat batteries. We’ll help you choose the best solution for your needs.
What plumbing connections are needed for the ZEB?
The ZEB requires the following plumbing connections:
- Central heating flow and return: 22mm copper pipes (solder, compression, or press fit).
Anything else required for ZEB installation?
Yes, to ensure the system operates smoothly, you’ll also need:
- Isolation valves: On both flow and return lines to allow the ZEB to be isolated from the heating system for maintenance.
- Automatic bypass valve: To ensure minimum flow through the ZEB when radiator valves are closed.
- Pressure relief valve: To regulate system pressure.
- Magnetic system filter: To prevent contamination and ensure the ZEB’s heat exchanger stays efficient.
Do I need a smart meter to use the ZEB?
While you don’t need a smart meter to use the ZEB, having one will allow you to access lower-cost electricity tariffs from your energy supplier. These tariffs can significantly reduce your running costs by allowing the ZEB to charge during off-peak times. However, even without a smart meter, the ZEB can optimise its charging to minimise your carbon footprint, making it a flexible option for all households.
Can the ZEB draw electricity at the same time as my EV charger?
Yes, the ZEB can operate simultaneously with your EV charger. A typical EV charger draws around 30A, and the ZEB draws 40A, meaning the total load would be around 70A—well within the typical 100A household limit, depending on other electricity loads in your home at the time.
My heating demand is high – can I use two ZEB units and charge both overnight?
This is theoretically possible, as each ZEB draws 40A, meaning two units would draw 80A together. This is still under the typical household limit of 100A. However, parallel running of two ZEB units is a feature Modern Renewable Solutions and tepeo are working on fully supporting in the future.
What happens in a power cut?
During a power cut, the ZEB, like any conventional boiler, won’t be able to provide heat as the circulation pump will stop without power. However, the heat stored in the ZEB’s core will remain for several days, slowly dissipating over time. Your home will retain some warmth from this stored heat.
What happens if I demand heat faster than the ZEB can replace it?
The ZEB has 40kWh of high-density storage, allowing it to charge during low-cost times and discharge when heat is needed. However, during periods of high heat demand, the ZEB can charge and discharge simultaneously. If the demand for heat exceeds the ZEB’s charging capacity (15kW discharge, 9kW charge), the stored heat will deplete faster than it can be replaced. Modern Renewable Solutions can help you optimise settings to manage this balance effectively.
Can I use excess solar PV energy to charge the ZEB?
Currently, this feature is still under development. In the near future, you’ll be able to use excess solar energy to charge the ZEB, allowing for an even more eco-friendly heating system. Stay tuned for updates from Modern Renewable Solutions.
How does Smart Charging work with the ZEB?
The ZEB uses a Smart Charging algorithm that charges the system at the cheapest and greenest times of the day, ensuring it’s ready for use when needed. This system considers factors like:
- Local weather conditions
- Your home’s heating needs
- Carbon intensity and energy pricing on your tariff
The ZEB works best with “time of use” or “flexible” tariffs, where electricity prices change throughout the day. Modern Renewable Solutions can help you select the best tariff to take full advantage of Smart Charging.
Yes, absolutely! With the tepeo App, you can manage your ZEB from anywhere.
